Using Free Web Resources for

Second Language Teaching & Learning

Workshop Description:

Faculty and staff who are teaching or learning second languages are invited to attend this hands-on session to try out an assortment of free multi-lingual web resources/multi-media tools for language teaching or independent studies outside the classroom.

 

1. Tag Galaxy: Build your vocabulary in different languages:   http://taggalaxy.de/

2.  Free Online Language Courses: Learn many languages and cultures with interactive exercises with audio/video.                              http://www.word2word.com/course.html

3.  BBC Languages: The BBC offers free comprehensive online courses in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, and Greek, with slightly briefer introductions to several other languages.                 http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/

4. Vocabulary StudyStacks: Games in many languages.  http://www.studystack.com/

5. The Internet Polyglot: Provides study materials for 21 languages. The unit-based materials available are ideal for a students already familiar with the basics of the language and interested in practicing specific areas and applications.  http://www.internetpolyglot.com/

6. Multimedia Interactive Modules for Education & Assessment: A series of interactive multimedia modules for language learning, practice, and assessment.  The modules are based on video clips that show native speakers and nonnative speakers interacting in natural, unscripted situations.  Interactive exercises reinforce language and cultural topics that spring from the scenarios.  http://mimea.clear.msu.edu/index.php

9. MakeBeliefs: A free web site where children and adults create their own comic stips online in many languages and, in so doing, practice language, writing and reading skills.  WRITER PROMPTS utilizes interactive techniques and regularly offers educators new ideas to spark students’ imaginations and encourage them to write more.   http://www.makebeliefscomix.com

10. Room Maker, Doll Maker, Puzzle Maker, Roiworld(more than 700 Roiworld Dress Up games):  Can be used for listening practice in many languages in the classroom, practice of prepositions, colors and adjectives with furniture items and clothing items, etc.  http://elouai.com/new-room-maker/index.php
